Abstract

The purpose of this research is to analyze the depiction of eastern people in the novel Brick Lane. This study uses Edward Said's theory of Orientalism. This research found that the image of the Eastern people appears in several characters, namely that the Eastern people are stupid, which is represented by the character Nazneen, who cannot think normally about the meaning of a marriage. Easterners are also portrayed as poor people, as represented by the character Chanu. This analysis concludes that there is an Orientalism view that demeans human subjects who come from eastern countries.
