The Strategic Role of Indonesian as a Foundation for Literacy inElementary Schools
Abstract
Indonesian plays a crucial role as the foundation for literacy development inelementary schools (SD). Literacy skills are a fundamental competency thatelementary school students must possess to face the challenges of the 21stcentury. Indonesian plays a strategic role as the language of instruction andthe primary foundation for literacy development. Literacy at this levelfocuses not only on reading and writing skills but also includes the ability tounderstand, interpret, and communicate information. This article aims todescribe the role of Indonesian in strengthening literacy in elementaryschools. The method used is library research, analyzing various literaturesources related to the curriculum and language learning. The results of thediscussion indicate that integrated mastery of the four language skills(listening, speaking, reading, and writing) is an absolute prerequisite forstudents' academic success in other subjects. In conclusion, strengtheninginnovative Indonesian language learning is a key factor in building a cultureof literacy from an early age in elementary schools.
