Abstract

This study explores the role of Indonesian language learning in improving students’ literacythrough a descriptive qualitative literature review. Literacy encompasses not only reading andwriting skills but also the ability to understand, analyze, and interpret information critically. In Indonesia, students’ literacy levels remain relatively low, highlighting the importance ofeffective language instruction. The findings reveal that student-centered approaches, such astext-based learning and interactive discussions, significantly enhance literacy skills. The use ofdigital media also increases students’ reading interest and comprehension, althoughchallenges such as limited access and teachers’ technological competence persist. From asociolinguistic perspective, the use of slang reflects students’ social identity but may hinderformal language proficiency if not properly guided. However, it can also serve as an engaginglearning tool. Additionally, family and school environments play a crucial role in supportingliteracy development. Overall, improving literacy requires a balanced and holistic approach.
